Have you ever kept things out of duty, guilt, fear, anxiety, sentiment or living in the past?
I thought I'd explore this question today after chatting this week with a friend, who has had to set very clear boundaries with her Mum who is a collector of Stuff. Her well meaning Mum was continually giving her "presents" that she didn't need, have room for or even like or want, all the time.
Have you ever experienced anything like this?
It can really be a help if we learn to set boundaries of what we allow into our home as
these things can build up and before we know it they've cluttered up our life.
My friend had to explain to her Mum, who didn't understand what the problem was, that she didn't have room for the "stuff" she kept giving them and that she had to stop. Not an easy conversation for her, but she braved it out and feels much better now the rules are set. Plus she can refer back to the conversation when her Mum tries to sneak something in!!!
Some other instances where we can end up keeping things that are no longer
making us happy are:
Keeping clothes that you paid a lot of money for but feel guilty throwing away,
Keeping clothes in another size, hoping you'll fit back into them "one day",
Keeping a gift you hate because you feel you can't get rid of it,
Scared you'll need those widgets you've been storing for the past 5 years someday,
Hanging onto every piece of artwork that your ever children made, plus their baby clothes,
You want to let go of items but just never get the time.
I'd love to know if you're keeping something that doesn't make you happy? And Why ?
