Do you sometimes fall into the trap of making Grand Plans?
I really, really love big ideas and making Grand Plans. So much so, that sometimes those Grand Plans are so big that I actually don't know how or where to start to achieve them!
Now don't get me wrong, to have a Grand Plan is fabulous thing! But I have learnt along the way that a series of lily pads across the pond of our Grand Plan is a much easier way to travel to reach our destination.
Maybe your Grand Plan is to get organised, yet everywhere you look there is just so much to be done and the job seems so immense you give up because you just can't do it all, and anyway, where would you start with such a huge task looming in front of you?
How about if I were to offer you a series of lily pads? You could leap deliberately from one to the next, in careful measured steps... knowing you were getting closer to your destination all the time.
How much easier would that be?
Here's something to try.....Think quick!
What area is causing you the biggest headache?
Got it? Write it down.
OK, now set aside half an hour, you can even set a timer if you like....
Work on that one area that is really giving you the niggles for the full 30 minutes, and only that area, don't be tempted to skip off to start something else. It might be your pantry, your bathroom drawers or your home office.... Just do as much as you can in that half an hour. Then Stop!!! Step back and I bet you'll be amazed at how much you've achieved.
You might feel inspired to set the timer for another half an hour, and if you have the time spare -
Go for it!!!
By breaking your big project into regular manageable chomps you will keep your enthusiasm fired up. It's so nice to see results and, actually feeling the immediate benefit of those results, on an ongoing basis, is fabulous encouragement to keep going.
My next hop on the lily pad is maintenance....factor a small time slot into every single day to attend to a little bit of organising maintenance. Making sure items go back to their allocated spot, tidying the pantry after a busy weekend of cooking and socialising, filing your paperwork...you get the picture....
When you do the little tasks, they take a little bit of time to do.
But you know what happens when you let the little tasks get together? They're like teenagers throwing a party when you're away for the weekend!!!!!!!!!
Below are just a few of the things you can achieve when a huge task is broken down into manageable bites.
Imagine having an organised pantry with all the meals for the coming week stocked in it,
Imagine having a sorted wardrobe that works for you,
Imagine having a launch pad so you family can get out the door calmly on time every morning,
Imagine having a home office that is a pleasure to work in...
In my next couple of articles I'll work on giving you some practical advice on working through each of these areas, step by step.
You won't get there in one leap, but you will arrive, slowly and surely, without falling in the cold water!
