Being organised every, single day isn’t actually as hard as it sounds, and by following these super simple steps you'll be setting up the framework for a fabulous day to grow and blossom. All you need to concentrate on is forming a few good habits that will be the backbone of your organised life. Starting each day with a set of routine habits is your first important step towards being organised.
If you add these super, simple steps into your day you'll be on your way to living a calm, smooth running life. Wouldn't you love to have extra time to spend doing the things you enjoy?
1. Follow a Routine
Setting the routine for your week is as simple as making a list of all the recurring things you need to get done.
For example : Exercising, grocery shopping, washing, ironing, home chores, washing the dog and my boys homework are a few that are on my list. (plus essentials like lunching with girlfriends and drinks on Friday night!)
When you allocate events to your weekly routine it frees up your memory space and makes your brain feel "happy" because you won’t be thinking “I've got to do this…” and “I mustn’t forget to do that.” You know that “this” is done on a Tuesday and “that” is done on a Thursday…Easy Peasy!
Plus, you know those tasks we all d-r-e-a-d doing??? well, sticking to a routine helps to make them become automatic. With your routine in place you just do them, without putting them off, because that's the day they get done.
Try this out by making a general plan for your days and stick to it for a week. Write out a list of what you need to get done and cross each one off once you finish it. Don't you just love the feeling of crossing things off your list? I know I do!
TIP : Kids really love routines and it'll help your home to run smoothly and calmly when everyone knows what, and when something, is expected to be done.
2. Prepare your Launch Pad
and Leave your Keys in the Same Spot Every Time!
I’ve set up special baskets for my husband’s keys, mobile phone, small change and any other junk that comes out of his pockets. He puts them in the same place every single time he walks through the door.
We have a special spot in the entrance of our house for these items, so he never has to run around late for work wondering where his keys or mobile phone are hiding. I’ve done the same for my handbag and my sons school bags.
Having a landing place for everything, that everyone knows about, will save
you so much time and hassle on busy mornings that you'll be sending me silent thanks!!!
Taking a few minutes to prepare your launching area is a great investment in the rest of the
day. Starting your day in a calmer, more positive way will flow on to a calmer, more positive day.
A few things to do the night before:
Customise your launchpad to fit your life and schedule. The more you can do the evening before, the less hectic your morning will be on the way to work and school.
TIP: Make sure you show family members where their expected landing and launching points are. You may need to gently remind (or threaten!!!) them of this process until they have formed the habit!
Each night after dinner take a few minutes to make a new To-Do list for the next day. By doing this each evening you have a clear idea of what you need to accomplish the next day and it helps you to mentally get ready for the next day and know what to expect.
I also recommend carrying a small notebook with you everywhere you go, with a page reserved for your To Do list. You can also write down errands, items for your shopping list and any great ideas you have during the day. It's easy to use, portable and never needs re-charging!
You never know when you'll need to quickly jot something down:
4. Spend 10 minutes making a Meal Plan for the Week.
Taking the time to make a meal plan can save you money, time, calories and stress, oh and did I mention CALORIES!!! Why wouldn't you meal plan???
If you are new to meal planning, start with a list of favourite family meals, then slot them in for each day of the week. Aim to do your weekly meal planning the day before you go grocery shopping, that way you can also work on your shopping list at the same time. Nothing like a bit of multi-tasking to save you time & effort!
I personally find it simplest to only plan the evening meals, but if you’re ambitious you can add in other meals. (Remember though, we are planning meals to make life easier, so don’t feel pressured to have to plan every single meal down to a T)
Planning your meals for the week will save you :
5. And finally, such a simple one ......... Do the dishes!
I know this sounds so simple but it really does make a difference. After cooking your dinner make sure the dishes are done every night before you go to bed. If you have children, involve them and get them to help out too…it’s teaching them great life habits and also that the family works as a community. If everyone helps out the work is done quickly and then you can all relax and enjoy your evening.
Getting up to face a dirty kitchen and a sink full of dishes in the morning is a very negative way to start your day. Why not make this a priority every evening and enjoy starting your day on a much more positive note.
Also studies have shown that people with clean kitchens cook more. Wouldn't you feel more inspired and motivated to cook healthy meals when your kitchen is clean and organised?
TIP: Make your bed, too! It'll set up a positive vibe for the rest of the day.
